Every year millions of Americans look to the barren corner of their living room and battle with one of decembers greatest quandaries, do i get a real or fake tree? For many, tradition decides for them. Fake trees in my family were standard, the same fake tree was used in our family year after year after year. I can still remember the different colored paint on the wire twisted “branches” that indicated where they went. It may not be old traditional, but it harkens back fond memories in the Green Gear Houshold.
With the increasing influesnce on environmentally sustainable products, many people are viewing their tree choice through “green” lenses, and as a website that rates products, I’d like to chime in.
From a strictly “green” standpoint. Put our vote in the real tree column. Fake trees are just that, fake… as in synthetic, plastic, nylon, and require processing, assembly, packaging, and transportation to Home Depots and Mao-Marts everywhere. Every step in the creation of a fake tree requires liberal use of materials, electricity, and non-reusable fuels.
Real trees on the other hands, are natural. Their creation requires little more than god’s ingredents, dirt, seed, water, and sun. The average age of a freshy cut tree is 7 years. During that entire time the tree is taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and putting oxygen back in. And if online sources are to be believed, 2 seeds are planted for every tree harvested.
Real trees are also usually provided by local growers, or more local than fake tree farmers. But of course, there is nothing more green, or picture perfect for family memories than driving out to a farm and cutting your very own christmas tree… Griswold style.
